William Thomas Abundis

June 12, 1960 — November 11, 2019

William Thomas Abundis, 59, of Moline, IL, passed away on November 11, 2019, at UnityPoint Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, IL.   Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded.  Services will be at a later date with inurnment at the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island.  Memorials may be made to Quad-City Animal Welfare Center. William, aka Bill, was born on June 12, 1960, in Los Alamitos, CA, the 3 rd child of Mary Joanne Slominski and Frank C. Abundis. William grew up in Ventura, CA. He attended Holy Cross School, served as an Altar Boy (later to be dismissed from Holy Cross…if you know him, you know why), and graduated from Venture High School in 1978.  While in Ventura, he could always be seen in one of his Roadrunners with a 440 and a torque flite, racing around. He wrestled for Ventura High, and loved the Big Ring Wrestling.  In 1979, he moved to Washington State, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1981.  He served our country via the USS Midway CV 41 from 1981 to 1985, having trained as a Navy AS-Aviation Support Equipment Technician.  He was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal. William returned to Washington after serving our country and worked in the automotive retail industry.  In the mid-1990s, William drove his mom across the country to Illinois and decided to stay… (He had a warrant or two in Washington, nothing horrible).  He loved working on cars and could fix anything, usually after first either breaking or wrecking it.  He was known for starting projects and leaving them unfinished, as well as being a magnet for any type of mishap.  He had the worst luck ever, and even if covered in bubble wrap, would surely need to have a cast on or stitches put in him somewhere.  He couldn’t catch a break.  Being a roofer was not the best job for him, and after his foot was smashed by a forklift, he gave it up and worked at the Rock Island National Cemetery.  William never had a filter, and those who know him, know it’s true.  He loved being overseas and was a true sailor in every sense.  He just never knew when to “shush” it.  William had a huge heart, a soft spot for animals, and loved his dog, “Little Billy”, with everything in him.  He even named his dog after himself.  He was a caretaker to anybody who needed it, people or animals. Survivors include his father, Frank Abundis of California; his siblings, Alex, Chris, Jennifer, Marcus, Tara, and Richard; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Lawanna Lewis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary JoAnne Slominski; his grandparents, William and Jennie Slominski; and his brother, Wesley Abundis.
