Martin was born in Davenport, IA, on July 8, 1922, to Dr. John and Marcella (Costello) Martin. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1940 and began her career at Lane & Waterman Attorneys in Davenport. She later worked at the Rock Island Arsenal. Virginia married Jack "Jay" Langdon Barnard on July 19, 1947. They moved to the Rock River in Moline to begin their family. The couple had two sons, Dan and Rob, who enjoyed growing up on the Rock River. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Virginia made friends easily and enjoyed spending time with her friends and all of her family. She was an active volunteer for Trinity Hospital in Moline and Rock Island, IL, for many years. She enjoyed her time in the Altar & Rosary Society at Sacred Heart, and was a life-long member of the church. She was also president of the PTA while Rob was attending Maple Grove elementary. Some of the hobbies Virginia enjoyed the most were gardening, sculpting, and traveling. She was a dutiful explorer, spending much of her time hiking, canoeing, and picnicking along the rivers and lakes in the Quad Cities and Minnesota areas. Virginia was an avid reader of the newspaper, magazines, biographies, mysteries, and suspense novels. She is a cancer survivor diagnosed with both colon and lung cancer. She always maintained a brave and cheerful outlook for an optimistic future, and made it through radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Most important to her was her family; she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and attended many school and sporting events for her sons' and her grandchildren. She and Jack took many trips to various parts of the world, and loved seeing new places and meeting new people. Virginia is survived by her husband, Jack Barnard, and her two sons: Dana (Jan) Barnard of Rock Island and Robert (Kim) Barnard of Orion, IL; three cherished grandchildren: Austin, Grant and Kinsley; sister: Jean Fuller; brother: Robert Martin; thirty-plus nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Dr. John and Marcella Martin, brothers: Fr. John Martin and Don Martin, and sisters: Barbara Dockery and Betty Heigel.
