Virgene Ilene Paulsen

September 13, 1933 — August 21, 2014

Virgene Paulsen, 80, of Rock Island, IL, went home to be with our Lord on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at UnityPoint/Trinity West in Rock Island, surrounded by her family. Services will be Monday, August 25th, at 1:30 pm, at First Covenant Church, 3303 – 41st Street, Moline, IL. Friends may also greet the family from 11:00 a.m. until the service begins. Following the service, friends and family are also invited to attend the burial at National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center or the Alzheimers Association. Virgene Ilene Paulsen was born in Waterloo, IA, on September 13, 1933, to Earl and Gleo Mae (Ham) Erbe. On August 22, 1953, in Waterloo, she married Herbert Klint Paulsen, who survives. They met at the Big-T grocery store where they both worked, and have now celebrated 61 years of marriage. Virgene was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She worked at the Montessori School in Moline for eleven years, and retired in 1991. She was a librarian, and found great joy in reading stories to the children. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping for books to share with her students and grandchildren. She was a long-time member of First Covenant Church in Moline, where she sang with the choir, and was devoted to her bible study. She spent many hours playing her piano. She enjoyed all music, and sang for many years with the Sweet Adelines. One of her social events was Bunco with her girlfriends. In addition to her husband, survivors are: daughters Kathryn Potts of Bettendorf, IA, and Rhonda Paulsen of Holly Springs, NC; son David Paulsen of Moline; sister Earlene Hein of Cedar Falls, IA; grandchildren Jessica (Scott) Williamsen, Justin (Mandy) Potts, Molly Ren, and Jack Ren; and great-grandchildren Alexis and Addison Potts. The family wishes to share a special thank you to the caregivers and family at St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center, where Virgene resided with her husband, and Herb continues to reside.
