Verna Constance Trevor-Carroll

Verna Constance Trevor-Carroll, 94, of Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 2nd from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 3rd at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. To honor Verna’s memory, memorials can be made in lieu of flowers, to the National Alzheimers Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Edwards Congregational United Church of Christ in Davenport. Verna was born in Moline on June 19, 1923, to Frederick and Mae Stanley Wilkinson Starofsky. On January 14, 1943, in San Marcos, TX, she married John Clarence “Jack” Trevor, who passed away in 2002. She later married Richard Douglas Carroll in Davenport, IA. He passed away in 2010. She graduated from with the Rock island High School Class of 1941, and was active in arranging m any of the class reunions. She also attended Augustana College and the University of Austin Texas. She lived a full and active life. She was an avid reader, and she enjoyed visiting many countries while traveling with her husband, Jack. For many years, she participated in china painting, creating many heirloom pieces that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She carried on a family tradition started by her grandfather, Nostic Starofsky. In the mid-1880’s, he played the violin for most of the dances in the Moline area. Her father also was a violinist and his sister, Ethel, played in the Tri City Symphony Orchestra. Verna began lessons when she was nine years old and played in grade school and both Junior High and Senior High School orchestras in Rock Island. During WWII, when her husband was stationed at San Marcos Army Air Base in Texas, Verna taught Latin and Algebra in Lockhart, TX. Upon their return home, she taught ballet, tap, and physical fitness at the Moline YMCA, and spent several years working at C. I. Josephson Jewelers and Connor’s Jewelers, where she helped develop the National Bridal Service. As the business expanded, she became their trademark model, appearing on letterheads, window decals, and all publicity regarding the bridal service. Her passion was working alongside her husband, Jack, and sons, Butch and Patrick, at the Trevor Hardware Stores. For many years, she served as Corporate Secretary, Treasurer, and Bookkeeper. With the help of her dear friends, Berneil “Buzz Odell and the very talented Ruth Allison Anderson, she started and developed The Round Tuit Gift Shop, which became an Art Gallery featuring the work of Edna Hibel. Verna was a member of the Gloria Dei Circle Kings Daughters in Rock Island from 1933 to 1941, and the Elizabeth Jane Brashear Circle Kings Daughters from 1946 to 1985. She served first as Secretary and then as Vice President of the Moline Junior Symphony Board, and along with Berneil “Buzz” Odell and Lois DeLeon, started the Hospitality Cart, which soon became the first gift shop at Lutheran Hospital in Moline. Survivors left with Verna’s memories include sons, John Clarence “Butch” Trevor and wife Kathleen, and Jasbir “Jessey” Hullon and wife Kundip, all of Moline; daughter-in-law, Patricia Trevor of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Trevor, and Anna Trevor, both of Moline, Dr. Jennifer Trevor of Skokie, IL, Patrick Christopher Trevor and wife Jennifer Davis of AppleValley, MN, Michael Ball-Trevor and husband Raymond of Davenport, IA, and Darshan Trevor Hullon who is attending medical school in Lakewood Ranch, FL; great-grandchildren, Diego Trevor of Moline, Kaidence, Raven, and Willow Ball-Trevor, of Davenport, John Patrick, “Jack”, and Emma Christine, all of Apple Valley, MN; niece, Eldreda Tunnicliff Johannessen and husband Dr. Carl Johannessen; and nephew Gerald Trevor Tunnicliff of Arlington, VA. Verna was preceded in death by her two husbands, Jack Trevor and Richard Carroll; her daughter, Christine Ann Trevor; her son, Patrick Tyrrell Trevor; her sister, Frances Wilkinson Drennan; and her parents, Frederick and Mae Starofsky.
