Tom Lundeen, 81, of Rock Island, IL, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at his home. Per his wishes, cremation rites are being accorded, and there will be no visitation or services. Arrangements are being handled by Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Thomas C. Lundeen was born in Moline on October 12, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. Curt Lundeen. On June 25, 1949, in Moline, he married Sallie Kirk, who preceded him in death April 16, 2006. Tom attended Moline public schools, and the University of Iowa before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. After military service, he completed his education at the University of Illinois, earning his degree in architecture. He was employed in the office of William Stuhr in Rock Island before opening his own firm in 1957. With partner, John Toline, the office was responsible for the design of numerous public and private buildings, including the Unitarian Church in Davenport, the Moline YMCA, the Quad City Airport Passenger Terminal, and many schools, churches, and commercial buildings. He retired in 1984, and the practice was sold to the present firm of Gere/Dismer, Architects. Tom was active in professional and civic affairs. He served as president of the Quad City Architectural Association, of the Western Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and as secretary of the Illinois Council of the AIA. He was also president of the Moline Foundation, and of Bethany Home, and served on the boards of the Moline YMCA, the Davenport Children and Family Services, the Quad City Arts Council, the former St. Catherine/St. Mark School (now Rivermont Collegiate), the Midwest National Bank of Moline, and the Mercantile Bank in Davenport. After retirement, he and his wife, Sallie, traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and Scandinavia. They built a home near Apple River, IL, where he was a member of the volunteer fire department. The couple later moved to Iowa City, and were active in the University of Iowa Museum of Art. In 1999, they returned to the Quad Cities to reside at Steepmeadow Condominium. Survivors include: his son: Tad Lundeen of Schaumburg, IL; a sister: Katherine (Howard) Johnson of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Sallie, he was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Curt Lundeen, and a sister: Mary Thorngren. At the time of his death, he was licensed to drive after dark, and to fish in Illinois. Have a nice day.
