Shirley M Smith

Shirley M. Smith, 90, of Rock island, IL, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016, at her home. Per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 29th, at 11:00 a.m., with a one-hour visitation prior to the service, at Wendt Funeral Home, in Moline. Inurnment will be at National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Shirley M. Beckhart was born in Rock Island on May 12, 1925, the daughter of Maurice and Rose Mary (Defore) Beckhart. In 1942, she married Norman Steelhammer. Later she married Charles W. Smith of Milan, IL, who preceded her in death in 1973. She graduated from Rock Island High School in the Class of 1942. She retired, in 1990, from the Rock Island County Office Building, after ten years. Survivors include two daughters, Randy Tompkins and Joyce Scott, both of Davenport, IA; a stepson, Michael Smith of Dallas, TX; a half-brother, Earl (Helen) Crain of Coeur d’Alene, ID; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a nephew, Marty Leffel of Rock Island; a cousin, Joann Sedam of Rock Island; and two life-long friends, Eleanor Waeyaert and Margie Wright. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, one sister, and a special friend, Conrad Sargent.
