Sherwood Nelson

July 1, 1920 — July 20, 2012

Sherwood M. Nelson, born July 1, 1920 to Herman C. and Lillian Nelson of Rock Island, died in his sleep Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Silver Cross Nursing Center of Friendship Manor, Rock Island. He was 92. Services will be held Friday, July 27th, at First Lutheran Church, 1230 Fifth Avenue, Moline, at 11:00 a.m. with a 1-hour visitation prior to the service. Immediately after the services, there will be a luncheon/reception at the church. The family will then attend a private graveside service at National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #246. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in Moline, or American Cancer Society, 225 N Michigan, Suite 1200, Chicago, IL 60604. Bud attended Rock Island schools, Augustana College, and was a graduate of the University of Iowa. After graduation, he was employed as an artistic lithographer by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in Washington D.C. During World War II, he enlisted and served in the Army Air Corps. Following the War, he was employed by Desaulniers Printing Company of Moline, as an artist, and then, art director and sales representative. Later he joined the sales team at Action Ad of Bettendorf, IA, where he worked until his retirement. Bud had interests in, and collected, antique autos. He followed the Cubs and the Hawkeyes, and had many art-related interests, including the encouragement of his four sons as they all pursued design careers. Bud married Virginia Harriet Johnson on September 16, 1944, and resided in Moline. Virginia preceded her husband in death on March 3, 1995. He married Kay James (formerly Friedlund) of Rock Island, on September 6, 2008. He is survived by his wife Kay, and his sons: Dave (Linda), of Granger, IN; Carl (Marsha), of Eden Prairie, MN; Paul (Linda), of Winnetka, IL: Tom (Debby), of Bloomington MN, and their families, which include eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bud was an active and long-standing member of First Lutheran Church in Moline, and a respected member of the business community. He was generous in spirit and a devoted husband and father. As the Nelson family patriarch, his love, his wit and his council will be sorely missed. His sons will be forever grateful for the example he set in raising a family.
