Sherman J. Scherer, age 92, of Racine, WI, formerly of the Quad Cities, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Veteran’s Home in Union Grove, WI. Services will be held at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL, on Tuesday, March 10th, at 11:00 a.m., with a one-hour visitation held prior to the services. Interment with Full Military Honors, accorded by American Legion Post 246, will take place at National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to Holy Communion Church Children’s Christmas Program, 2000 West 6th Street, Racine, WI 53405. Sherman was born in Rock Island, October 21, 1922, son of George and Maysie (Sherman) Scherer, and had been a Racine resident since November 2008. During World War II, Sherman proudly served in the United States Army stationed in the North Africa, Pacific, and European Theaters. He also served during the Korean Conflict. On January 1, 1945, in New York City, he was united in marriage to Marjorie J. Joseph who preceded him in death on September 13, 2008. Sherman was employed by the Rock Island Arsenal for over thirty years until his retirement in 1984. Always very athletic, Sherman enjoyed swimming, and loved his time golfing with the Tuesday morning Johnson retirees, and he continued golfing until this last fall. He was thankful for his friends at the Imperial Apartments and Fountain Hills, and his daily visits with his faithful companion, Clementine, and for the Chicago Cubs and Bears. His greatest joy came from being around his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids. He will be dearly missed. Survivors include his children, Susan Barbee of Racine, James Scherer of San Jose, CA; six grandchildren, Zachary (Erica) Barbee, Joshua (Lisa) Barbee, Jordan Barbee, Justin (Angie) Barbee, Jenny (Trevor) Mosher, and Jessie Scherer; thirteen great-grandchildren, Melanie, Maxamus, McKenna, Savannah, Isabella, Anakin, Addy, Amelia, Paige, Graham, Naomi, Collette, Winter, and, soon to be born, Walker; brother-in-law, Bob Joseph; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Robert Barbee.
