Robert S. Baker, 89, of Moline, IL, died Monday, November 28, 2011, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, IL. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Services will be held Friday, December 2nd, at 11:00 a.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to the Moline Vikings Club. Robert S. Baker was born in Moline on March 23, 1922, to John W. and Della M. (Slocum) Baker. On August 22, 1964, in Cambridge, IL, he married Etta M. Math, who preceded him in death December 28, 2005. Bob served as a Radarman in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945, during WW II. He was co-owner and operator of Settle Construction Company in Moline and Silvis, IL. Prior to that, he was the Construction Engineer for Illinois-Iowa Blacktop in Rock Island. He was a member of the Moline Viking Club, a 44-year-member of the Moline Elks, and a life-member of the Moline V.F.W. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed playing golf, and was a member of the Little Plows baseball team, playing the position of catcher. Survivors include: son, David Baker, and step-son, Mike Math, both of Rock Island. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and a brother. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Hope Creek Care Center for the wonderful care provided to Bob.
