Robert "Bob" Scherer, 83, of Moline, IL, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Oak Glen Home in Coal Valley, IL. Robert John Scherer was born March 2, 1925, to Warren and Lela (Mongerson) Scherer, in Eldon, IA. He was formerly married to Betty Gargus. He then married Florene Glines in Rock Island, IL, on March 2, 1977. Bob served in the Navy as a baker on the Destroyer Callaghan in the Pacific during WWII. He retired, after 38 years, from John Deere Company's Milan Parts Division. He was a member of Christ Church, Colona, IL. He had previously been a 50-year member of the Moline Gospel Temple. He drove the bus on Sundays for over 20 years, and was active in the Bus Ministry and the Youth Ministry. He belonged to the Jubilee Club, was a Church Deacon, and spent many Sundays visiting shut-ins at nursing homes. Bob enjoyed baking and taking pictures. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 20th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Friday, March 21st, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island in Rock Island, IL, with Military Rites accorded by the American Legion Post #246 of Moline. Memorials may be made to Christ Church in Colona, IL. Survivors include: his wife: Florene; one daughter: Rebecca (Manual) Solis of the state of Florida.; one son: Marlon Scherer of the state of Washington; two brothers: Donald Scherer of Eldon, IA., and Kenneth Scherer of Ankeny, IA.; four grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
