Richard (Dick) Shannon Newberg, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA.
Dick was born on May 29, 1937, in Moline, IL, where he grew up and graduated from Moline High School. On June 20, 1959, he married the love of his life, Barbara Hoerrmann, his high school sweetheart, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline. Their union of 65 years was a beautiful testament to love and commitment.
A proud veteran, Dick served his country honorably as a Marine, stationed in Hawaii. He was deeply engaged in his community, serving as past president of Moline Crime Stoppers and as a member of the City of Moline Parks Board. Professionally, Dick owned and operated Schofer Adjusting Company in Moline before retiring from Kennametal (formerly L.R. Christiansen, Inc.).
Dick was an avid athlete in his earlier years and an accomplished handball player, earning numerous tournament victories at the Moline YMCA, where he was a lifelong member. Ever a man of determination, he celebrated his 50th birthday by running 50 miles—a reflection of his enduring spirit and love for challenge.
He cherished life’s simple joys, from his morning coffee outings with his buddies at the Village Inn, Hy-Vee, Flips, and the Moline Activity Center, to tending his stunning flower garden. Above all, Dick treasured his family, who brought him immense pride and joy.
Dick is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his children, Tracy (Lori) Newberg, Michael (JoAnn) Newberg, and Stephanie (Patrick) Rangel; and his cherished grandchildren, Blake, Brett, and Ryan Newberg, Austin and Averi Rangel, and Spenser Warren and Alex (Courtney) Warren, his great-grandchildren, Addison and Wyatt, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George Newberg, a sister Jean Clauson, and brothers-in-law Richard Hoerrmann, William Evans, Tom Potter, and Richard Clauson.
A funeral service to honor Dick’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Wendt Funeral Home. Visitation will occur on Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moline Activity Center, a place Dick loved and frequented.
Dick’s legacy of love, determination, and community spirit will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
