Richard Harris, 87, of Moline, IL, died Friday, August 24, 2012, at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, IL. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A private family service will be held. A visitation will be Monday, August 27th, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, 724 - 2nd Avenue West, Milan, IL 61264 Richard S. Harris was born in Moline on April 6, 1925, to Laur S. and Dorothy G. (Hood) Harris. On November 21, 1946, in Davenport, IA, he married Shirley A. Belter, who survives. He graduated from Moline High School, and attended St. Ambrose College, He entered the military in 1942, at age 17, and served in Bougainville, Guam, and Quadalcanal, as a U.S. Navy Seabee. He worked for Bendix Corporation for 17-1/2 years, then worked three years for the Davenport School System. He was with Moline Tool Company for eight years, and then worked as a purchasing agent for the City of Moline for eight years, retiring 22 years ago in 1991. He was a member of the National VFW, and loved woodworking. He was passionate about his craft, and left behind many beautiful wood creations for the family to cherish. In addition to Shirley,his wife of 65 years, survivors include: daughters: Danita Bemis of DeKalb, IL, and Barbara Harris of Davenport, IA; sons: Douglas (Charlotte) Harris of Bettendorf, IA, and Steven Harris of Milan, IL; a sister: Marlene Heene of Green Valley, AZ; a brother: Wilfred Harris of Rock Island; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother: David Harris.
