Richard Robert Sour

August 25, 1934 — August 1, 2024

Richard Robert Sour, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2024, in Peoria, Arizona. Born on August 25, 1934, in Hamlin, South Dakota, to Robert and Evelyn Sour.

Richard‘s early education was at Dixon 4 County School in Hamlin County, where he attended grades 1 through 8. He continued his education at Bryant High School for three years and then graduated from Hayti High School in 1952. His commitment to service was evident when he enlisted in the Army in December 1954, proudly serving his country until September 1956.

He returned to his academic pursuits and graduated from South Dakota State University.

He then moved to the Chicago Area, where he established a successful custom drapery business.

Richard’s heart found his match in his beloved wife, Suzanne, and together, they built a home in Arizona after marrying in 1986. There, he started a window blind company, later transitioning into a career as a realtor.

Richard shared a love of golf and traveling in their RV with his wife, Sue, during their retirement years. He also loved working in his garage, where he could fix anything and everything with his collection of tools he cherished.

Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife, Suzanne Sour, his daughter, Rochelle Gilmore, and his siblings, Donna M Truman, Phyllis Kitterman, Larry Sour, Jerry Sour, and Chuck Sour.

He is survived by his children, Carrie Greenberg (Robert), Heather Kneeland, Rebecca Janczy (William), Roderick Gilmore (Lisa); grandchildren Aaron, David, Joshua, Jacob, Andrew, Jessica, Robert, Matthew, and Lauren; and his sister Marlys Popham. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Those who knew Richard will remember him as a man who was always ready to help others, whether it was through his warm conversation, helping hand, or simply by being a dependable presence.

The family would like to thank the staff at White Dove Assisted Living in Peoria, AZ, and Hospice of the Valley for their kind and compassionate care of Richard and Suzanne over the past year.

A private memorial service and interment for Richard and Suzanne will be held for the family. Arrangements are in the care of Wendt Funeral Home.
