Richard Martin, 78, died Dec. 5 in his Port Byron home that he helped build. Vascular and Lewy Body Dementias and Parkinson’s took their toll on his body, along with a bad heart that refused to stay in rhythm.
Visitation will be at Wendt Funeral Home on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 11-12 with a short service to follow. Private family burial will take place at the Rock Island Arsenal Cemetery.
Richard was born to Robert and Mildred Martin, graduated from MHS in 1963, and attended Blackhawk but was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed at JD Planter as a Journeyman Machine Repairman for 37.7 years.
Rich married Linda Frits in 1969; they later divorced, and he became the single parent of their children. In 1981, he married Donna Bielema and blended their families into one with her son Jody, 10, Amie, 7, and Drew, four years old.
Rich loved the '37 Ford that he had had for over 50 years with 104,000 miles on it and was a Quad City's Vintage Rods member.
Those left with memories are Donna, Amie, Drew, Jody, grandchildren Nathan and Melissa, sister Diane (Dave) Ballard (Moline, IL), brother Tom (Goodyear, Az.), five nieces, and many friends.
PLEASE consider donating to Dementia and Parkinson’s research .. until you have dealt with these incurable diseases, one does NOT understand the toll they take on not just the person who often IS aware of changes but the family, as well.
Many thanks to the VA and Unity Point Home Hospice for ALL the help they offered us until we reached the end of his journey.
Family and friends are invited to share memories and express online condolences at wendtfuneral home.com.
