Richard A. Steelman, 93, of Moline, IL. passed away Friday, January 24, 2014, at UnityPoint/TrinityWest in Rock Island, IL. Services will be Tuesday, January 28th, at 12:00 noon, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, with a one-hour visitation beginning at 11:00 noon. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #246. Burial will be in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island in Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, 1724 - 15th Street, Moline, IL. Richard A. Steelman was born in Roodhouse, IL, on December 2, 1920, to William Ashley and Ollie May (Mitchell) Steelman. On August 4, 1962, in Moline, he married Jean Dismer, who survives. He served in WWII in the Western Pacific Air Offensive over Japan, flying over thirty-five missions. He was a participant in the first Honor Flight from the Quad-Cities. Richard served as Principal at Horace Mann Elementary School in Moline, for over thirty-five years. He loved to travel, play Bridge, was an ardent Cardinal Fan, and was an avid pheasant and quail hunter. He was a member, and former Sunday School Superintendent, of Salem Lutheran Church in Moline, was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and a former member of American Legion Post #246. In addition to his wife, Jean, survivors include: sons, Michael (Kathleen) VanAcker of Sherrard, IL, and Gregory (Ellie) VanAcker of Sacramento, CA; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Wilma. The family would like to thank Heartland Care Center, and extend a special thanks to Marion, Tyson, and Danielle.
