Michael R. Wendt, age 67, of Moline, IL, passed away, surrounded by a loving family, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at Trinity Rock Island, after an eight-month battle with cancer. Visitation will be Friday, December 3rd, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Saturday, December 4th, at 9:30 a.m., at First Congregational Church, 2201 - 7th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be immediately following at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Honors by Post 246 Moline, of which he was a member. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moline Breakfast Club Optimists, or to First Congregational Church Moline, IL. Michael Richard Wendt was born in Moline on August 17, 1943, to Earl and Helen (McClean) Wendt. He married the love of his life, Pamela J. Barron, on November 18, 1972, in Moline, at the First Congregational Church. He graduated from Moline Senior High School in 1961, from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1964, and from Parsons College with a Business Degree in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army, and received the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam. Mike's name is inscribed in the Book of Honor in the Court of Patriots in the Browning Museum at the Rock Island Arsenal. Mike retired in August 2005, as Manager of the Moline office of the Illinois Department of Employment Security. He was licensed funeral Director and a former partner in the Wendt Funeral Home, and continued to assist in funeral services when needed. He was a member and Past President, of the Moline Breakfast Optimist Club, Past President of the Moline Jaycees, and was Jaycees Boss of the Year for the East Moline Jaycees. He served on the Board of Trustees of First Congregational Church, and previously served as church council member, head usher and Sunday school teacher. He was a Past President of the Mississippi Valley Funeral Directors in Rock Island County, served on the Moline School Foundation Board, was a member of the Private Industry Council, and the Workforce Investment Board of Rock Island County. Mike was a seven-gallon donor at the Mississippi Valley Blood Bank. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, going to Disneyworld with his grandchildren, and loved being with his family. He could often be found attending the sports events of his grandchildren and found great joy in teaching them checkers, their letters, and how to play cards. He was their favorite babysitter. In addition to his wife, Pamela, survivors include: daughter: Cecelia Wendt of Moline; son: Michael (Eileen) Wendt II of Moline; two granddaughters: Kendall and Carson, and grandson: Jack ; brothers: Earl (Coralie) Wendt III of Moline, Patrick (Candace) Wendt of East Moline, and George (Jeanie) Wendt of Bloomington, IL; aunts: Mary Jane McClean of Moline, and Francis Paradise of Glendale, CA; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, William R. Wendt.
