Mary Lois Kirschbaum, 88, of Rock Island, IL, died Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Silver Cross Respite at Friendship Manor in Rock Island. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6th, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Services will be Thursday, October 7th, at 10:30 a.m., at United Presbyterian Church, 801 - 16th Street, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island in Rock Island, where Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Honor Flights of the Quad Cities, or to Friendship Manor. Mary Lois Young was born in Camden, IL, on May 5, 1922, to Clifton and Nellie (Ashcraft) Young. On October 4, 1943, in Moline, she married Roland J. Kirschbaum, who preceded her in death December 28, 1996. She served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy from April, 1944 until November, 1945, attaining the rank of Yeoman 3rd Class. She was employed for a time as an office clerk at the former International Harvester Company Farmall Works in Rock Island, and was a teachers' aide, and a Tupperware Sales Manager. Mary Lois was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Moline where she happily served as a Prayer Warrior, the Dorcas Circle, Kings Daughters Silver Lining Circle; Rock Island Golden "K" Kiwanis Club; and WAVES National Association. She served as President of the Horace Mann PTA in Moline, served on the Moline PTA Board, was a life member of the Illinois State PTA, was a member of WIAAA Council and Board for 14 years, and served as chair on both the RSVP Council and the VAC Board for three years. She was a member of the American AMVets, and received the award for the Illinois Lieutenant Governor's Legislative Forum of Area 3 "Volunteer of the Year 1981". On April 23, 2010, she enjoyed going on an Honor Flight to see the WWII monument in Washington, DC. Survivors include: three sons: James (Dixie) Kirschbaum of Moline, John (Sheralee) Kirschbaum of Winfield, IL, and Thomas (Kimberly) Kirschbaum of Davenport, IA; one sister: Rhea Tyler of Pittsboro, NC; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
