Lyle D. "Salty" Soltau, 80, of Moline, IL, died, after an extended illness, Friday, December 18, 2009, at Heartland Health Care Center in Moline. Visitation will be Sunday, December 27th, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Monday, December 28th, at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL, with Military Honors being accorded by American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post #246, or to Beacon of Hope Hospice. Lyle Dean Soltau was born in Voorhies, Iowa on September 26, 1929, to Ernest and Huetta (Whannel) Soltau. On August 9, 1952, in Morrison, IL, he married Roedean J. Norkus, who preceded him in death on May 22, 2007. He served in the U.S. Navy, during the Korean Conflict, from 1951 to 1953. Lyle was employed as a Safety Inspector for the Rock Island Arsenal for 29 years, retiring in October of 1988. He was a member of the American Legion Post #246 in Moline, holding several positions, and served as an Honor Guard. Lyle was a big fan of the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival, which he attended every year, and he enjoyed collecting music. Survivors include: a son: Geoffrey, D. (Cindy) Soltau of Davenport, IA; daughters: Rochelle "Shelly" (Roger) Hunt of Davenport, and Sara J. Soltau and Heidi L. (Rick) Holly, all of Santa Barbara, CA; a brother: Bill Soltau of Davenport; and five grandchildren: Josh, Dan, Ben, Jake, and Marisa. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. A special 'thank you' is expressed by the family, to the staff at Avonlea Assisted Living, Heartland Health Care Center, and Alternatives For Older Adults.
