Jan Barnard, 80, of Rock Island, IL, passed back to her God on the morning of Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at home while in the company of her loving husband, Dana. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 17th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 18th, at 10:00 am, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1308 – 13th Street, Moline. Burial will be on a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Moline. Memorials may be made to the choice of the donor. Lillian Janet Simmons was born October 26, 1934, in Tracy, IA, the daughter of Christopher Columbus and Clara (Lamphier) Simmons. On May 26, 1984, in Moline, she married Dana Barnard, who survives. Jan was a substance abuse counselor for the majority of her life, working at Riverside Retreat in Rock Island, and the Center for Alcohol & Drug Services in Rock Island and Davenport. She touched countless lives in her work, and was devoted to “her people”. She was a trusted servant of the AA program for 41 years, and lived as an example of making recovery her “way of life”. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, was a voracious reader, a passionate gardener, and enjoyed an occasional jaunt to the casino. She loved being around people, children especially, and had a smile for everyone she met. Survivors include: her husband, Dana; children, Karla (Edwin) Schultz-Hass of Everett, WA, Kerri (Stewart) Davidson of Centennial, CO, Kim (Dale McCaskel) Schultz of Indianapolis, IN, and Greg (Kathy) Schultz of New Mexico; sisters, Joan Sparks of Davenport, IA, Jean (John) Groy of Milton, FL, and Sally (Don) Springer of Hershey, PA; her father-in-law, Jack Barnard; brother-in-law Rob (Kim) Barnard; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved step-father, Palmer Olson, her brother Forest “Bub” Simmons, and her granddaughter, Melissa. Jan’s spirit had remained strong and she will live on through all of us who love and honor her. Thank you all.
