Leonard A Schimmel

Leonard Schimmel, 62, of Rock Island, IL, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at his home. Visitation will be Monday, July 27th, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Services will be Tuesday, July 28th, at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home. In keeping with his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island in Rock Island, on Wednesday, July 29th, with Military Rites provided by American Legion Post 246 of Moline. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice, or to the Moline High School Basketball Program. Leonard A. Schimmel was born in Moline on March 27, 1947, to John and Margaret (Coon) Schimmel. On July 30, 1966, in Coal Valley, IL, he married Rosanne Martens, who preceded him in death. On April 20, 2001, in Rock Island, he married Connie Semotan, who survives. He graduated from Moline High School, and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He was an electrician, working out of the IBEW Local #145 Union Hall for 33 years, retiring in 2003. He was an avid fan of Moline Basketball, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, the Fighting Illini, and he enjoyed playing the game of golf. In addition to his wife, Connie, survivors include: a daughter: Jane (Justin) Anderson of Moline; a son: Steven Schimmel of Moline; three stepdaughters: Julie (Scott) Madden of Oxford, IA, Betsy Semotan of West Liberty, IA, and Angela Thomas of Champaign, IL; a sister: Julie (Tom) Nicholson of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers: Ken (Linda) Schimmel of Fresno, CA, and Mick (Jan) Schimmel of Moline, IL; seven grandchildren; and his beloved dog "Gracie". He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosanne Schimmel, and his parents. "Good night, Gracie........"
