Leonard A Hawk

Leonard A. Hawk, 91, of East Moline, IL, formerly of Moline, IL, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 14th at 2:00 pm, at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials in his name may be made to the ARA Foundation, 1900 – 19th Street, Moline. Leonard was born in Moline on March 24, 1924, to Homer and Mary (Keim) Hawk. On December 23, 1943, in Davenport, IA, he married Marilyn Anne Mitchell. They were together for 65 years before her death on August 18, 2008. He graduated from Moline High School, attended Augustana College, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a life-long member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Moline, and was active in the Moline business community. In 1954, he became the owner/operator of A1 Rental in Moline. Leonard was one of the founders, and the first president, of the American Rental Association (ARA), a worldwide trade association for equipment rental companies that remains located in Moline. ARA inducted Hawk into the initial class of the Rental Hall of Fame in 2001, and the ARA Foundation honored him by creating the Leonard Hawk Founders Scholarship in 2009. Survivors include two grandsons, Parker and David Hawk; and two sons, Paul and Mark Hawk, both of Moline. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and his parents.
