Lena M Helms

Lena M. Helms, 93, of Coal Valley, IL, formerly of Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017, in Coal Valley at the home of her granddaughter. Visitation will be Sunday, August 27th, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Monday, August 28th, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Estates in Moline. Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Lena Streit was born in Allerton, IA, on August 19, 1924, to Peter and Grace (Cook) Streit. On April 19, 1941, in Unionville, MO, she married Wallace Helms, Jr, who preceded her in death May 27, 2005. She was a dietitian at the former Lutheran Hospital in Moline, for twenty-one years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in East Moline, IL. She loved cooking, baking cookies at Christmas, playing cards, and enjoyed her membership in the Bunco Club. Lena also liked to travel, and was an avid bird-watcher. Survivors include a son, Larry (Donetta) Helms of Ophiem, IL; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Helms, her daughter, Opal Loveall, a grandchild, and two brothers.
