Larry E. Bettis, 64, of Moline, IL, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at Trinity Rock Island in Rock Island, IL. Services will be Friday, November 4th, at 6:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. There will be a three-hour visitation from 3:00 p.m. until time of the service. Memorials may be made to Gift of Hope. Larry E. Bettis was born in Ferndale, MI, on November 18, 1946, to Ethan and June (Allgood) Bettis. He married Patricia Caldwell in February 1969, and later married Diana L. Johnson on October 20, 2001, in East Moline, IL. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed as a Welder for John Deere Harvester in East Moline, for 34 years, retiring in 2006. Larry was the first amputee to complete the National Ski Patrol Training, and was a ski instructor and member of the ski patrol at Snow Star. He participated in many skiing competitions. He was a stock car photographer for several area race tracks, played basketball for the Quad-City Rough Riders, and enjoyed golf. He especially loved going to the movies with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Diana, survivors include: a daughter: Stacey (Demetrios Kouzios) Bettis of Chicago, IL; sons: Chad (Thea) Bettis of Moline, and Brian (Sherri) Lager of Aledo, IL; a sister: Janet (Dale) Stroud of Springfield, OH; a brother: Richard (Linda) Bettis of LeClaire, IA; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Roland Bettis.
