John Henry Knaack, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on January 21, 2024, at Hope Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East Moline, IL. Born on March 28, 1925, in Moline, IL, to John H. and Mary (Scherer) Knaack, Sr., John lived a full life marked by service, dedication to his family, and a multitude of interests that brought joy to himself and those around him.
John's early life was defined by a sense of duty and patriotism. At the tender age of 18, before he could complete his high school education, he enlisted in the United States Navy. His service during World War II was distinguished, and he was honored with several medals, including the European African Middle Eastern Area Campaign Medal (1 Star), the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal (1 Star). After his honorable discharge in 1946, John demonstrated his resilience and commitment to personal growth by obtaining his G.E.D.
On November 1, 1946, in his hometown of Moline, John married the love of his life, Fanchon "Penny" Nelson, who would be his companion for 70 years until she preceded him in death in 2016. Together, they raised a family that would be John's pride and joy. He is survived by his daughter, Georgia (Kent) Stevens of Elmwood, IL; his son, John (Trudy) Knaack. of Moline; and his daughter, Julie (Tim) Mills of Knoxville, TN. John's legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren, Todd (Marni) Stevens, Brett (Brandy) Stevens, Jennifer (Michael) Zambrano, Sara (Jayme) Eckert, Lindsay (Brian) Bell, and Katherine (Jason) Stewart, as well as his fifteen great-grandchildren, who will all remember him fondly.
John's professional life was characterized by hard work and entrepreneurship. He spent the majority of his career with A.D. Huesing, where he was a respected employee. In addition to his commitment to his job, he pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating his own construction company, Contract Roofing. His work ethic and leadership were an inspiration to many.
Beyond his work, John was an active member of the Left Bank Art League, where he shared his passion for creativity and artistry. He was a man of many interests, including painting, flower gardening, bird watching, and fishing. His camp in Hillsdale on the Rock River was a treasured retreat where he spent countless hours immersed in the tranquility of nature, often with family and friends by his side.
Those who knew John would describe him as friendly, thoughtful, and kind. He had the rare ability to make everyone feel at ease in his presence, and his kindness radiated through his community. John's thoughtful nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he cared for his family to his interactions with friends and even strangers.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fanchon "Penny," his sisters Katherine and Mary, and his brother George. His life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, and the human spirit. John's memory will be cherished and kept alive by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Friends and family are invited to visit and share memories of John on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 11 am until 1 pm at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. A funeral service celebrating John's life will follow at 1 pm. His final resting place will be at Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with honor and distinction.
