James B. “Jim” Sweet, 78, of Rapids City, IL, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, IL. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 6th, 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. The private inurnment will be at Rapids City Cemetery in Rapids City, IL, at a later date. Please, no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Hope Creek Sweet Music Therapy Fund. James Byron Sweet was born in Moline, IL, on July 30, 1937, to Hartwick and Elizabeth “Dolly” (Carlin) Sweet. On May 14, 1958, in Moline, he was married to JoAnn E. Kappler, who preceded him in death April 14, 2012. Jim graduated in the Moline High School Class of 1955, and attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA. Prior to his retirement in 2002, the many businesses that he owned and operated included, the Captain’s Table Restaurant in Moline, Sweet Datsun Automobile Dealership in Galesburg, IL, Kimberly Chrysler Automobile Dealership in Davenport, the Marquis Harbor in Moline, Quad City Marine in Davenport, and The Boat House Restaurant in Davenport. Jim was a former Mayor/Board President of Rapids City in the early 1980’s, and was a past-president of the Propeller Club, and a member of Lindsey Park Yacht Club. In his early years, he enjoyed being an announcer at the Cordova Dragstrip in Cordova, IL. He loved the river, boating, cars, and especially loved his family and his many close and cherished friends. Survivors include daughter, Lori (Glen) Bentley of Davenport; son, David (Lori) Sweet of Moline; and grandchildren, Julie and Lisa Bentley and Emily Sweet. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Mertin Sweet, a.k.a. Kevin Donaldson.
