Homer Ervin Hurst

Homer Hurst, 91, of East Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Services will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 1:00 pm, with visitation from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm before the service at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.

Memorials may be made to the Bi-State Sportsman's Association.

Homer was born in Pekin, IL, on March 30, 1933, to Homer W. and Iva V. (Parker) Hurst. He married Helen Hurst on August 26, 1951, and she preceded him in death in 2009 after 58 years of marriage.

Homer served in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1957, stationed in New Mexico and assigned to the 8th Air Force Strategic Air Command. He worked for the Chicago Rock Island Pacific Railroad as a Train Engineer for 44 years until his retirement. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, a Master of Masonic Lodge 898 member, and a past Master of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Shriner's and, for years, would drive the children back and forth to Shriner's Hospital. Homer was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island, and a past member of First Christian Church, Moline. He was a member of the Bi-State Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed traveling, trap/skeet shooting, and hunting. He competed for several years in the World Skeet Championship held in Texas and traveled to various parts of the world to hunt with his son.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Jean (Terry) Erickson of Hampton, IL; a son, Michael Hurst of Davenport, IA; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Audrey Osterhagen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and his parents.
