Herbert D. Harker, 91, of East Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at Bettendorf Health Care Center in Bettendorf, IA. A visitation will be held Friday, October 9th, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Saturday, October 10th, at 10:30 a.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #246, and the Patriot Guard. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established at a later date. Herbert Harker was born in East Moline on November 3, 1923, to John Jefferson and Lena (Hoerr) Harker. On July 20, 1946, he married Syble Doyle, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal as a Numerical Tooling Technician until he retired in 1980, after thirty-three years. He was a member of Four Square Church in East Moline, and taught Sunday school for seventeen years. He played baseball, and coached the Browns Little League Team in the 1950’s, and the church league, in East Moline. He enjoyed watching sports, dirt-track stock car races, fishing, and making fishing lures. He and his granddaughter loved to garden. In addition to his wife, Syble, survivors include daughters, Robin Johnson, Gloria Winthurst, and Penny Harker, all of East Moline, and Patty Roberts of Colona, IL; his son, Don (Kathy) Harker of East Moline; a sister, Marion Wymore of Moline; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, five brothers, and two sisters.
