Helen M. Nelson, 102, of Rock Island, IL, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017, at Friendship Manor in Rock Island. Services will be held Tuesday, November 14th, at 11:00 a.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL, with a half-hour visitation prior to the service. Burial will take place at National Cemetery on Arsenal Island in Rock Island. Following the burial there will be a luncheon at Bethel Wesley UMC, 1201 – 13th Street, Moline. Memorials may be made to a No-Kill Animal Shelter of the donor’s choice, or to the Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church in Moline. Helen Braasch was born August 1, 1915, in Moline, IL, daughter of William and Mildred (Johnson) Braasch. The family lived on farmland in Moline, and Helen attended the old Moline High School. On June 24, 1937, she married James J. Nelson, who preceded her in death September 20, 1983. Helen first worked as a secretary in the patent department at John Deere & Company, and later, for many years, was a legal secretary for three different attorneys, most recently, Craig Grafton. Helen was a member of Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church, and an active member of United Methodist Women. She had a very dear friend from church, Mary Ann Harvey, who spent many hours visiting and assisting her. Helen was a member of the Quad-Cities Chapter of the American Theater Organ Club, and loved playing her organ at home, and also enjoyed playing poker at Friendship Manor. Helen lived a long, healthy, happy life until the age of 102. She was a lovely lady and liked by all. Survivors include, her daughter, Carol (Ted) Teacher of Dana Point, CA; grandchildren, Eric (Ashley) and Fara; three great-grandsons, Benjamin, Finn, and Chase; a very special nephew and his wife, Alan (Kathy) Reschke, who entertained Helen on many of their family holidays; a special grand-nephew and his wife, Brynn (Chris) Sheley, who always included Helen in their family events and took her for car rides with stops at Whitey’s Ice Cream, which thrilled her greatly; two nephews, Harold and Ronald Braasch of Jacksonville, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews who paid her visits that she enjoyed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and her sister, Marjorie Reschke, and her brother, Harold Braasch.
