Helen donated her body to University of Iowa Medical school, and eventually, her ashes will be burried with her late husband, William R. Mahar, at the Rock Island Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Helen's name, to the Memory Care Unit at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, or to L.S.S.I. In-Touch Adult Daycare Center in Moline. The daughter of Ralph and Hazel (Steffa) Bachelder, Helen was born in Rockford, IL, on December 14, 1921. She was married to William Ackerman in 1940, in Davenport, IA, for four years. Helen later married William R. Mahar, in Davenport, in 1945; they moved to Moline in 1948. Helen attended Davenport Center High School, and later, received her GED at the age of 65. Helen was a homemaker and worked part time for H&R Block Company. She completed training at the Rock Island Arsenal as a draftsman before the end of World War Two. Helen was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline, a life-long donor to the Mississippi Valley Blood Center, a life-long member of the Moline Women's Auxiliary American Legion, Post 246, and a life-long member of the Women of the Moose, Moline/ East Moline chapter. An avid bowler, she was a part of nine WIBC Winter League championship teams, and three Senior League championship teams between 1959 and 1990. She also played Bingo, as often as she could, in many QCA locations. She enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, travel, board games, and reading romance novels. Later in life, Helen lived at Westwood Terrace in Moline, for 10 years, where she enjoyed being with her friends on the 6th floor, and the 6th Floor Chicago Cub Fans gatherings to watch the Cubs on TV. This was not so much for the baseball; it was about the fellowship. She also enjoyed being a participant of L.S.S.I. In-Touch Adult Daycare Center in Moline. Helen had nine brothers and sisters, Edward, Robert, Donald, Keith and Kenneth, Lorriane, Dorothy, Ruth, and Shirley May. Helen had eight children, (their spouses) William Ackerman (deceased), Beverly (Frank) Garret, Silvis IL, Colleen (Paul) Bonney, Davenport IA, Helen (David) Gustafson, Marrietta, GA, Roberta Alender, Rock Island IL, Harry Mahar, Geneseo, IL, Terisa (Roy) Bunch, Rock Island IL, and Patrick (Lisa) Mahar, Rock Island IL. Our family was blessed with fifteen grand children and ten great-grandchildren. Helen loved spending time with her friends and family. As her health declined, so did her memory. Despite that, she was always good natured to the very end. It could be said that on a good day, she would remember you, and on a bad day, she was still happy to see you! The family would like to thank the staff of In-Touch Adult Daycare Center, and dedicated ladies of the Memory Care Unit at Hope Creek Care Center.
