Fred J. Marzolph, age 87, Moline, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Trinity Medical Center West in Rock Island, Illinois. Arrangements are at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, Illinois. Visitation is Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Services are Friday, June 24, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1230-5th Avenue, Moline. Burial is at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Military Rites will be provided by American Legion Post #246. Fred was born on April 16, 1924 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Fred C. and Margaret (Schow) Marzolph. He married Penelope Kokines in October 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. He moved from Chicago to Muscatine while working for Eastman Kodak and later moved to Moline and worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and the Dispatch. He retired in 1989 from the Dispatch where he worked as a photographer for 36 years. He also worked part time for Augustana College doing sports and other photography from 1958 to 2005. In 2005, the Augustana College Alumni Association unanimously voted to award him the Honorary Alumnus Award, the highest honor that the Alumni Association bestows upon friends of the College. While at the Dispatch, he won many awards for photography from the Associated Press, United Press, Illinois Press Photographers Association and the National Press Photographers Association. He was elected Treasurer of the Illinois Press Photographers, and in 1961 was elected as Vice President of Region 5 of the National Press Photographers Association. He was appointed as National Membership Chairman and was also twice Chairman of the Illinois Press Photographers Seminar and Convention. He also served as a Pictures of the Year National Press Photographers Chairman. In 1973, he was appointed as a member of the Niabi Zoo Advisory Committee. He served as a Combat Crew member in the 8th Air Force in England in World War II and was later in the Air Reserves. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Moline. Survivors include the widow, three sons, Steven, Davenport, Iowa, Wayne and daughter-in-law, Susan, Rock Island, Illinois, and Marvin and daughter-in-law, Polly, Fleming Island, Florida, and five grandchildren.
