Frank Frederick Telleen, 94, Rock Island, died Wednesday, January 9, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Burial will be at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, January 13, at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. The family suggests memorials may be given to Augustana College (Frank and Carla Telleen Scholarship), to St. John's Lutheran Church, or to a favorite charity of the donor. Frank was born February 1, 1918, in Cambridge, IL, a son of Leonard E. and Vina Elm Telleen. He attended Cambridge schools. He graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, class of '39, and received a master's degree from Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. He married Mary E. Tucker in 1941 in Cambridge. She died in 1957. He married Carla J. Reynolds in Ascension Chapel, Augustana College, in 1961. She died in 2010. He worked brief periods at weekly newspapers in Galva and Carthage, IL, and then joined the staff of the Rock Island Argus, serving 15 years as a reporter and state editor. In 1958, he became director of information services at Augustana College. He remained with the college more than 27 years, serving for three college presidents, Conrad Bergendoff, C.W. Sorensen, and Thomas Tredway. The position included media relations, advertising, and publications. He served several years as editor of the former Augustana Alumni Bulletin. He retired in 1986. Frank was a member of the Moline Kiwanis Club for 50 years, and was a recipient of the George F. Hixson Fellowship Award from Kiwanis International. He served on the church council at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he was a member more than 60 years. He served on the board of directors of directors of the former Rock Island Chamber of Commerce, and also on the boards of the Augustana Historical Society, the American Scandinavian Association of Augustana, and class representative and board member of the Augustana Alumni Association. He also served as president of the former Iowa-Illinois Public Relations Council. His interests included music and sports. He formerly sang in the Handel Oratorio Society chorus, and the St. John's Church choir, and was a longtime patron of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. At Augustana, he was a member of the golf team, and remained an avid supporter of Augustana athletics. Survivors are, a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Califf of Rock Island; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Pamela Telleen of Minneapolis; five grandchildren: William Califf of River Falls, WI, Steven Califf of Milan, Matthew Telleen of Lancaster, PA, Erik Telleen and Elizabeth Allinder of Minneapolis; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret E. Houghton ofj Bethel Park, PA; and several nephews and nieces. His parents, three brothers: Kenneth, Leonard, and John, and a sister, Anita Wait, preceded him in death.
