Esther L Hess

Esther L. Hess, 97, of Washington, IA, formerly of Rock Island, IL, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Washington County Hospital & Clinics in Washington, IA. Services will be Friday, February 24th, at 11:00 a.m., with a two-hour visitation before the service beginning at 9:00 a.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Jewish Voice Ministries International, P.O. Box 31998, Phoenix, AZ 85046-1998; 1-800-306-0157. Esther L. Lawrence was born in Moline on December 22, 1919, to Carl and Vera (Swank) Lawrence. And in Lillian Smith, Esther had a mother-figure from the age of one year. On August 26, 1939, in Davenport, IA, she married Harold R. Hess, who preceded her in death May 15, 1987. Esther was an elevator operator in the former 5th Avenue Building in Moline for twenty years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Churches in both Moline and Washington, IA, the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Share Care, and the Christian Friendliness Association. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and enjoyed traveling, reading, crafts, and painting. Survivors include step-sons, Charles and Edward Hess; nieces, Pearl and Ruth Ann; and two great-nephews, Harrison and Marvin. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son, Lawrence Hess, a step-daughter, Deloris Blodget, a step-son, Donald Hess, two sisters, Ruth C. Gordon and Velma Alexander, a niece, and three nephews.
