Elizabeth L Heberling

Elizabeth L. Heberling, a resident of Friendship Manor, Rock Island, formerly of Moline, died June 5, 2008. A memorial service was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rock Island, on Wednesday, June 11th. She was born June 1, 1912, in Minneapolis, MN, to Dr. Muret and Josephine Homan Leland. She attended Minneapolis public schools, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and University of Minnesota, graduating summa cum laude in 1932. She taught art in the Mason City, IA public schools from 1932 to 1936, and in the Davenport public schools from 1936 to 1941. Later, she taught art in the Moline junior high schools from 1957 to 1973. In 1940, she married John Ward Heberling, attorney and former judge in Illinois. Her son, Jon Leland Heberling, is a graduate of Duke University and University of California Berkeley Law School, and is an attorney residing in Whitefish, MT, with his wife, Karen, and son, Shae. Elizabeth Heberling is survived by her son; her grandson, Shae Heberling, a student at Montana State University; step-granddaughters Courtney Gwiazdon (spouse, Matthew) of Whitefish, MT, and Millicent Flanaghan (spouse, Gardner) of Steamboat Springs, CO, and great-grandchildren Ella and Mia Van Vlack, and Bode and Merritt Flanigan. She liked painting, reading, history, drama, civic activities, and travel. She took a great interest in others, laughed a lot, and was a delight to all who knew her. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Rock Island. She held offices in several of her organizations, Kappa Alpha Theta National Sorority; PEO, Moline; Kings Daughters; Guild, Moline; Honorary Pi Lambda Theta, Scholarship Sorority; and Quad City Panhellenic. She served on the advisory board of Moline High School, and the board of the Cleveland King's Daughters Home.
