Eleanor Patricia Devinney Cook, 84, of Rock Island, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Silver Cross Nursing Home, Rock Island.
A funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, with a visitation from 1:30-2:00 pm before the service. Burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Cemetery, Rock Island.
Eleanor was born in Rock Island, IL, on March 9, 1940, to Roy and Helen (Allen) Devinney. She graduated from Rock Island Senior High School in 1957. She married Courtney Frederick Cook on September 10, 1960, in Rock Island, and they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. They later moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Eleanor received her BA in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa. They then moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where their first son, Lester Vance Cook, was born. They moved to Wheaton, Illinois, where their second son, Edward Arthur Cook, was born. Eventually, the family moved to Middletown, New Jersey. Eleanor worked various part-time jobs including The Real Estate Exchange, Lincroft Junior College, and Red Bank Public Schools. She received her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Kean College of New Jersey.
After retirement, Eleanor and Courtney returned to the Quad Cities to live and later resided at Friendship Manor Retirement Community. Eleanor enjoyed painting, crafts, and activities at Friendship Manor, as well as spending time with friends and family. She was loved by many.
Eleanor is survived by her son, Dr. Les Cook, CA; her brother, Donald (Karen) Devinney, Moline, IL; her brothers-in-law, Ken (Susan) Cook, TX, Kimber Cook, NC; her sister-in-law, Karalee (Jerry) Kleehammer, FL, and many nieces, nephews, and their families and close friends, George and Carole Shirk, OH. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Courtney, and her son, Edward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or NAMI.
