Edward Artley Rice

May 20, 1932 — October 1, 2011

Edward Artley Rice (Art) entered eternal life surrounded by his loving family on Saturday October 1, 2011. Born to Lillie Florence and Thomas Marvin Rice in Conway, Missouri on May 20, 1932 (79), he began his love for the outdoors. His youth stories are full of adventure though the fields, streams, and woods of Missouri, pursuing his life's passion for hunting and fishing. Art proudly served as a Sergeant in the Korean War (1952-1954) for the United States Army. He lived most of his life in Milan, Illinois, ultimately establishing a Quad City icon, known, still today, as Art Rice Body Shop, in downtown Rock Island. Whether raising his three girls, hunting, or building one of his many homes, Art always had a sense of purpose and an uncommon way of solving a challenge. His three surviving daughters (Spouses): Deann R. Thoms (Thomas) Moline, IL, Dawn M. Whitten (Chuck) Lexington, Nebraska and Darci S. Rice (Dawn Smith) Newark, Delaware, speak of an adoring father and an unparalleled storyteller, who left you with a smile and a life lesson. Art is survived by his grandchildren: Matthew and Katya Magee, Lindsey and Jeremy Womack, Lukas Thoms, and Wade and Wes Whitten; his great grandchildren: Jillian and Jocelyn Womack; siblings: Marilyn Sue Hicks and Jerry Lynn Bone; and former wife Jacqueline Winchell. His parents and a sister, Geraldine Evaline Davis, precede him. Art and his family are grateful to the dedicated and professional caregivers of the Veterans Medical Center and University of Iowa Hospitals (SICU). Visitation will be held at Wendt Funeral Home on Thursday, October 6th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, located at 1811 15th St Pl, Moline, IL. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 10:30am, located at 1330 13th St, Moline, IL, followed by an interment ceremony at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. Memorial funds can be made to Waterfowl USA, Mississippi Valley Sportsmens Chapter, c/o Deann Thoms, 6 Timberline Ct., Rock Island, IL, 61201.
