Donald E Swanson

Donald E. Swanson, Jr, 71, of East Moline, IL, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017, at his home. God called Don to come Home so his spirit could triumph over the ALS that took his body, and he went peacefully with his family by his side. Visitation will be Sunday, April 9th, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline, IL. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 10th, at 15th Avenue Christian Church, 3600 – 15th Avenue, Rock Island, IL. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to 15th Avenue Christian Church or the ALS Association Iowa Chapter. Donald was born November 8, 1945 in Moline, son of Donald E. and Evelyn (Renner) Swanson, Sr. On September 10, 1966, in Rock Island, he married Marcia Hoaglund, who survives. Don graduated with the Moline High School Class of 1963, where he was a member of the baseball team. He then attended the University of Illinois, earning his degree in accounting. He was an accountant and later was in automobile sales at Green Chrysler and Courtesy Nissan. Don served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the church, serving in various offices, and as Deacon and then Elder. He also had been a member of the Moline Elks, the Moline Jaycees, and served as a coach in the East Moline Youth Baseball/Softball organization. He liked to garden, was an avid reader, life-long Cub fan, and die-hard Illini fan. Most of all, he enjoyed attending his grandsons’ activities. They were the light of his life. In addition to his wife, Marcia, survivors include his children, Lynne Swanson, and Jackie (Tim) Flemming, all of East Moline, and Stephen Swanson of Moline; three grandsons, Aaron, Ethan, and Tyler Flemming; his sister, Elaine (Jim) Nelson of Moline; his step-father, Marvin Schiess of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
