Donald E. Devinney, affectionately known as Don to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at UnityPoint Health in Rock Island, IL, on January 23, 2025, at the age of 88. Born to Roy and Helen (Allen) Devinney on September 25, 1936, in Rock Island, IL, Don lived a full and vibrant life marked by devotion to his family, passion for education, and a spirit of community involvement.
Don's early life in Rock Island set the stage for a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1954 and went on to excel at Northern Illinois University, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He married the love of his life, Karen (Anderson) Devinney, on November 28, 1958, in Moline, IL. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising a family.
Don dedicated his career to enlightening young minds as a teacher at Rock Island High School until his retirement in 1994. Even during summer breaks, he pursued various jobs, a testament to his industrious nature and desire to stay active. His work ethic matched his involvement in professional associations, including the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Black Hawk Education Association.
Beyond his professional life, Don was an avid enthusiast of the stock market, maintaining daily communications with his broker and staying abreast of market trends. His 1958 Thunderbird was his pride and joy, a familiar sight at car shows, and a symbol of his appreciation for classic automotive beauty. Don's hobbies also included collecting stamps and coins, activities that reflected his attention to detail and love for history.
A man of faith, Don was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church and Bethany Baptist Church in Moline. His spiritual life was a cornerstone of his character, offering him guidance and strength throughout his life's journey.
Don is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen, and his children, John Devinney of Rock Island, Rick (Nancy) Devinney of Moline, and Kathy (Dan) Lents of Arizona. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Lindsay Dotterer, Andrew (Christina) Devinney, Anthony Devinney, Abby Devinney, Kelly Lents, and Samantha Lents, as well as his great-grandchildren, Alayna and Ollie. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Kathy, and her husband, Chuck Ashford. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Eleanor Devinney Cook, and his daughter-in-law Julie Devinney.
Those who knew Don would describe him as a loving family man, handy around the house, and thoughtful in his interactions with others. His presence was a source of stability and compassion, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Donald E. Devinney will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, with a visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm before the service at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. The final interment will take place at Rock Island Memorial Cemetery in Rock Island, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Donald E. Devinney Business Scholarship at Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation , 1400 25th Avenue, Rock Island, IL 61201.
Don's life was one of purpose and joy, and his memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He walked through life with a kind heart and an open mind, leaving behind a trail of wisdom and love that will never be forgotten.
