Charlotte Georgia Smiddy

Charlotte Georgia Smiddy (Dearth), 91, of Moline, passed away peacefully at her home on September 30, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on July 31, 1933, in Moline, Illinois, Charlotte was the cherished daughter of George and Verna (Stropes) Dearth. She graduated from Moline High School in 1951 and went on to devote many years of service at the office of Dr. Paul McDevitt, where she was employed until her retirement in 2003.

Charlotte was a devoted member of the Community of Christ Church, where she faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, imparting her love of faith and wisdom to countless young hearts. Her love for music was evident in her skillful playing of the organ, which brought joy to many, and her quiet moments were often spent reading or working on intricate embroidery projects. One of her greatest pleasures was gathering with family on Christmas Eve, a tradition she treasured dearly.

She is survived by her daughter, Leslie McCallum, Moline; Valerie Hesse, East Moline; her sons, Craig (Jana) Smiddy, Moline and Mark (Shirley) Smiddy, Davenport; grandchildren, Markie Smiddy, Mendy (Scotty) Hines, Joey Hesse, Tara (Arthur) Martynov, Jessica (Tony) Bueras, Breanna (Kyle) Mischler and many great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Cindy Teaver, Springfield, MO, and her brother, Richard Dearth of Chesapeake, VA and a granddaughter-in-law, Lynsy Hesse. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved grandsons, Jason and Paul Hesse and son-in-law, George Hesse.

Special thanks to McKenzie Ford, Diamond Gonzales, Kylie and Aaliyah Hesse for their care, kindness, and love for Charlotte in her final months.

The funeral service to honor Charlotte's life will be on Friday, October 4, at 12 noon at the Community of Christ Church, Moline, IL, with a visitation beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charlotte's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
