Charles R. Hoaglund, 74, of East Moline, IL, died Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, due to complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis. He had received a lung transplant in June of 2004 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Visitation will be Monday, November 25th, from 3:00 until 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Tuesday, November 26th, at 11:00 a.m., at First Lutheran Church, 1230 Fifth Avenue, Moline. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mayo Clinic Department of Development, 200 First Street S.W., Rochester, MN 55905-9813; or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E.Ohio Street, Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611; or to the Rock Island County Historical Society, 822 - 11th Avenue, Moline, IL 61265; or to First Lutheran Church in Moline. Charles R. "Chuck" Hoaglund was born in Moline, on December 5, 1938, to Carl and Ethel (Hertzman) Hoaglund. He married Sharon Hanson on May 6, 1962, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Edford Township in rural Geneseo, IL. He graduated from Moline High School with the Class of 1956, and attended Moline Community College from 1956 to 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy in Argentia, Newfoundland from 1957 to 1959, and completed his military duties in 1962. He was employed by United Airlines for 36 years, at Elk Grove Village Executive Offices, at O'Hare International, and then at Quad City International Airport. He retired in February of 1995. Chuck is most known for being "Mr. Velie" because of his vast knowledge of local Quad City automobile manufacturers. Some of his memberships included: First Lutheran Church of Moline, Antique Automobile Club of America, Horseless Carriage Club of America, Rock Island County Historical Society (Director), Moline Preservation Society, American Legion, Viking Club, Quad Cities Computer Society, Horseless Carriage Club of America, and he was Editor of the Velie Registry Newsletter, "Long Life". Chuck was a Past President of the Mississippi Valley Region AACA, and was Chief Judge for many national and grand-national events. He enjoyed traveling with his family, and listening to his grandchildren play music. In addition to his wife, Sharon, survivors include a daughter, Janice (Anthony) Drain of Moline and grandchildren Sarah and James Drain; sisters, Marilyn (Cyrus) Galley of Rock Island, IL, and Emily (Dale) Anderson of Libertyville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son John Eric Hoaglund, and an infant sister, Jean Elizabeth Hoaglund.
