Bonnie Bradford left this world on Saturday, September 16, surrounded by family and loved ones. She was at peace and looked forward to being reunited with her husband of 36 years, Larry Bradford, who preceded her in death.
Those who knew her would never call Bonnie soft, mild, or meek. Instead, they would describe her as headstrong, opinionated, and self-assured. One never questioned what was on Bonnie's mind, for she rarely held back when she had something to say. Given her strong personality, it was inevitable that she would leverage her grit and determination to build a fulfilling life built on a solid foundation of integrity, self-assurance, and, above all, love.
Before women were ordinary in workplaces and corner offices, Bonnie was a successful entrepreneur, building her advertising agency, Bradco Company, from the ground up. She sought adventure traveling the country in an 18-wheeler at her husband's side before settling down as a homemaker dedicated to caring for her family. As a lifelong Democrat and Catholic, however, Bonnie was unsatisfied with mere personal success. Whether she was driving strangers to the polls in the 1970s, collecting winter coats for at-risk children, or inviting neighborhood teens into her home for afternoon snacks, she was happiest when acting in service to others.
Bonnie created a warm and inviting home that rarely lacked visitors. Her doors were always open, her pantry was always well-stocked, and her coffee pot never ran dry. She spoiled her dogs with abandon, created fantastical worlds for her grandchildren from little more than chalk & cardboard boxes, told the best stories late into the night, and relished singing folk songs tucked away in her "Secret Garden" on rainy mornings.
She was born in Moline, Illinois, on January 13, 1941, to Margaret (Versluis) and Carl Johnson. Bonnie Johnson wed Larry Bradford on October 1, 1966. She is survived by her children Jean (Steve) Hayes, Sue (Pat) Heffernan, and Gregg (Lori) Bradford, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. There will be no ceremony at her request. Anyone wishing to pay their respects is encouraged to donate or volunteer their time to your charity of choice. Bonnie was a proud supporter of the American Cancer Society and her local food pantries.
