They say the good die young. While that seems to hold true, Austin left his mark on this world, setting the standard for what it means to be a husband, a father, a son, a brother, and a friend. Austin lived purposefully, following his dreams and pursuing his passions with unrivaled conviction. Austin’s greatest contribution to all of us is the lasting legacy he leaves behind, which will continue to live on in his son, Hudson.
Reading through hundreds, perhaps thousands, of tributes to Austin and talking to Austin’s friends from different stages of his life, a few common themes become readily apparent: Austin’s smile was contagious, his love of life was palpable, and his love for his family was unmistakable.
Austin James Schoeck was born on November 3, 1993, in Davenport, Iowa. In 2016, Austin graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in political science. Austin subsequently attended Drake University Law School, earning a Juris Doctor degree in 2019. While in law school, Austin married the love of his life, Abigail, and in 2021, their son, Hudson, was born. Upon graduating from law school and passing the bar, Austin served as a judicial law clerk, followed by a short stint at a local law firm before serving as a prosecutor in the Scott County Attorney’s Office.
Austin was unique in the fact that he was far from being one dimensional. Austin pursued numerous passions with unparalleled commitment and determination. An accomplished tennis player, CrossFit athlete, and ultramarathon runner, the pursuit of these passions complimented one another, and together, culminated in the person we all came to know and love.
Some remember Austin as a professional and diligent prosecutor with uncompromising integrity and character. Others remember Austin’s easy-going personality, full of joy and positivity. Austin’s beloved running group, affectionately nicknamed, the “TUR(d)s,” remember his authentic, genuine personality, as well as his supportive and uplifting spirit in the pursuit of accomplishments some of us are unable to fathom – finishing 100-mile ultramarathons.
To me, Austin was more than that. For as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted was to be just like my big brother. Throughout our childhood, and from Augustana to law school, he paved the way, always leading by example. In sports, he taught me the value of sportsmanship and how to be a good teammate. As an attorney, while we pursued different paths, he taught me the importance of compassion and integrity. Most importantly, as a husband and a father, his love and commitment to his family should serve as guiding principles for how to live life.
Austin is preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Meers; aunt, Susan Meers; grandparents Clyde & Donna Schoeck. Survived by his wife, Abigail; his son, Hudson; his mother, Cynthia; his father, James; his brother, Jacob (Ashley); and his sister, Lily.
A visitation will be held 4-7 pm, Friday, May 12, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois. Despite wearing a suit and tie every day to work, Austin despised dressing up. In honor of Austin, please wear Philadelphia Eagles attire (or a team of your choosing). The funeral service will commence at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 13, 2023, also at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to Austin’s son, Hudson, which will be used to establish an education fund.
With love,
Jake
