Alice M. Groene, 97, of Moline, IL, died Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Heartland Care Center in Moline, where she had resided for several years. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 p.m. at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 8th, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1330 – 13th Street, Moline. Alice Minnie Nelson was born August 3, 1917, in Henry County, IL, the youngest of seven children born to Wilfred and Minnie Nelson. She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1935 and from the former Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. On September 13, 1942, in Rock Island, IL, she married Robert Henry Groene, who preceded her in death in 1969. She has two children: Nancy Bene of Duxbury, MA, and Bob (Cindy) Groene of Geneseo; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. “Mrs. Groene”, “Nellie”, or just plain “Groene”, as she was known by nursing students, physicians, and co-workers, was Head Nurse (now nurse manager or charge nurse) in the Labor and Delivery Rooms (now birthing center) at the former Moline Public Hospital for 40-plus years retiring in 1982. Alice was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline; a long-term nurse volunteer with American Red Cross and with the Churches United Food Pantry. She stayed physically fit with exercise: walking, bike riding, swimming, and golf. She was proud of the great care she took of her home, lawn, and landscaping. After retirement, she became a world traveler visiting several continents and m any countries. Alice is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and was preceded in death by her husband, and all of her siblings.
